Scanner is great, software a little bit lacking

This is a really nice, easy-to-use, affordable mobile scanner for black and white PDF files. The only issue is that the software that comes with the unit scans HUGE files (1 black and white page = .7 MB), so scanning and emailing several pages quickly becomes problematic.
I tried and tried but haven't been able to figure out how to get a smaller, normal file size. Plustek customer service takes 24 hours to respond and thought it might have something to do with scanning a searchable PDF but said they really didn't have any control over the software (that they ship with the unit).
If it weren't for this HUGE file scan I'd give this scanner 5+ stars.

One of our Most Used Pieces of Equipment

This is our third Plustek scanner, and this one was purchased to replace an older model that eventually broke after years of faithful service.
Sure, we could buy a flatbed scanner, but they take up a lot more space and in my experience are more fragile. We have a small trucking company, and my wife runs the office while I drive one of our trucks and fill in for her when she has other obligations she must meet. I keep one of these in my truck and she has one in the office and both have performed flawlessly since we purchased them.
The scanner has two buttons... one labeled "Scan" and one labeled "PDF". Both buttons are customizable, and I have the "Scan" button set to scan as a gray scale JPG file, and the PDF button set to scan, you guessed it, as a black and white PDF document. The PDF feature can be set to save each page as its own file or save a series of pages as one continuous PDF document. The scanning software allows a variety of tweaks to be made before even scanning, such as brightness and contrast modifications, edge detection, color of blank background, etc.
The scanner is very fast for a portable and has a removable tray (which we've never used) that makes it possible set up multiple pages to be scanned with one button press. The only drawback to the speed of this scanner is that it takes more power than the USB port on a computer can generate and that necessitates a separate AC power cord. This can make the scanner a bit inconvenient and awkward in some instances, and impossible if you're going mobile and don't have an available AC outlet.
I have two gripes that are important enough to me that they affeected my "star rating" of the scanner. One is that the scanners we bought had no dust sleeve. Keeping dust out of your scanner isn't just a good idea, it's down right vital to longevity of the scanner and the quality of your scans. My older model Plustek came with a very nice sleeve that I always stored the scanner in to protect if from dust. Though it is a very tight fit because the new model is a bit bigger than the old, I'm using the old sleeve on the road and I found a form fitting plastic bag for the wife to use in our home. The second gripe is that Plustek chose to stay with the older, less durable and now outdated mini USB plug instead of upgrading to the new standard of Micro USB.
All things considered, this is an excellent device. I'd like to give it fives stars, but due the oversight of not including a protective sleeve and the scanner using a mini USB connection, I just can't say this deserves a perfect rating.
