Fujitsu FI-6140 Scanner review
By GAH
Been using this scanner for several days at the time of review (Oct 7 2010).
Purpose: Got a basement with (at least) a couple of thousand journals to convert from paper to an electronic format - PDF. Yes, this is a long-term project that will take several months to a year.
In a few words or less - I really DO love this thing.
Owned a Fujitsu ScanSnap for a few years, love it, high quality but not suitable for high volumes, and am keeping it on my old PC.
The smaller brother of my machine is the FI-6130, at about half the scan speed of the FI-6140, otherwise identical, and also has much lesser price. Googling either model number will find the Fujitsu site itself, with a downloadable detailed PDF data sheet for each.
FI-6140 was installed on a new PC running 64-bit Windows 7. Am running the included "ScandAll PRO" scanner control software, it works nicely. Pages get created as image PDFs.
This printer INCLUDES Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard Edition, which runs well on my new PC. Acrobat's OCR scan option to turn an image document into a "real" searchable PDF takes about a half-hour per hundred pages, and I consider its conversion quality a MIRACLE, just amazing. Way better than I expected. I do other stuff while the OCR runs. I then use the Adobe "reduce file size" option to get document down from 250M each to about 27M, with a small but acceptable loss in image quality. (Takes maybe half the time the OCR does.)
Very small footprint. Scans front & back simultaneously.
Scan speed for B&W is about as fast as dropping pages on the floor - paper zooms thru it. I am scanning in color, slower, but still fast enough that the actual scan is plenty fast. Hard to give a time exactly because I do in batchs of about 20-30 pages in case of jam, minimizes any messes. (Unjamming is not needed often, and easily done.) (Software allows easy continuation of interrupted scanning, so no real limit to document size that may be scanned.) Hints: trim periodical binding SMOOTHLY (got a Martin-Yale 3000E paper cutter, its great); remove any mailer cards; remove any advertising pages with stiffer pages; if covers are radically different material than main body then scan them separately, don't stack in with main body (again continuation is easy); a make sure pages don't stick together before loading (obvious, but do it).
Documentation states that a number of parts are replacable (such as some of the paper grabbing parts) so that the scanner can be kept running reliably without having to replace the entire machine - will preserve your investment.
Well worth running up my credit card for.
Bought via Amazon, got the usual very fast shipping, product in perfect condition. It's all good!

Dandy Desktop Scanner
By J. Gammon
I upgraded from Fujitsu fi-5220c to this model, mainly for
increased speed. We use the scanner mainly to scan medical
records using PaperPort12 Pro. Unfortunately, the documentation
by Fujitsu and Nuance is lacking. For example, the Fujitsu 6140
comes with a excellent bundle of software but it is unclear how
to manage these features in PaperPort. A video tutorial demonstrating
the features, such as advantage of ISIS drivers vs TWAIN etc would
be most helpful. Otherwise, the scanner has performed well.

Good Quality Dependability
By Lynne
We purchased this model to replace an older Fujitsu. This unit was easy to set up. Even though we had to work the settings to get the final product the way we needed it, it has been such a great buy. No hang ups when scanning multiple pages and it's so quick! Batches that used to take all day with the old one now take just minutes. This has been a large boost in productivity for our company.
I would recommend this product.
