Good Portable Scanner but Needs Some Work

Since purchasing a Windows 8 tab, I have been eagerly looking for a good portable scanner to use with it. I heard about the Ion Air Copy about two months ago and eagerly hopped on Amazon to pre-order. I was so looking forward to this I eventually ended up cancelling the pre-order and purchasing elsewhere for more $$ just so I could receive faster. Initial impressions of this are that the device is fairly cheap. Buttons, indicator lights, and overall build seem a bit plasticky. Actual device works well, scans quickly and images look solid. I have scanned receipts of all sizes and have not needed to use the included carrier. You do need to download the actual app to be able to use this so no scanning solo. Could really use a carrying case to help protect. Also not entirely thrilled with the charger or lack there of. It includes a mini-USB cable but no wall adapter. Not a huge deal but a con none the less. Wish they had opted to go with micro-USB instead as I have plenty of those lying around.
Biggest disappointment was not being able to use this with my Surface RT. The app is readily available from the Windows Store but unfortunately my Surface does not detect the Wifi signal being broadcast by the Air Copy. I was able to connect quickly from my Windows Phone so I'm not sure what the problem is. I contacted Ion customer support last week but have yet to hear back. Will update if I get any resolution. Overall good but could use some improvements to be great.

Didn't Work

Bottom line is that this product did not work with my PC and I returned it. It worked with my ipad and iphone, but I wanted to use it with my laptop/PC for business reasons.
First of all, this item connects via wifi that it broadcasts. They use this as a selling point saying that this way you don't have to already be connected to wifi to use the scanner. However what they don't really make clear in the product description is that it also means that you CAN NOT BE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET via WIFI when you use the scanner. Just to be clear, this is not like printers or other devices connect to your network via wifi. I'm assuming that like me, most people have their computer devices connected to the internet using wifi. So with this scanner, it broadcasts a wifi signal that you have to connect to with your laptop (or iphone/ipad/etc.).... which also means that you have to disconnect from the internet. This is very annoying.
Second, my laptop (PC using Windows 8) did not see the scanner's wifi signal that it was broadcasting. So even if I did want to go through the annoying step of disconnecting from the internet to connect to the scanner every time I wanted to scan, I couldn't. I was able to do this with my ipad and iphone, so this might just be a problem with PCs or even my PC. However, I've had no other issues connecting anything to my PC (including printers) or using it frequently with other wifi networks when I travel with it. So I called the manufacturer customer service number and worked with the tech for 15-20 minutes. He was nice, but unable to fix the problem. He said it was an issue with a setting on my computer, but he couldn't figure it out. He was very clear that this wasn't an issue with the scanner since it worked with my ipad and iphone and was hinting that I should accept this situation. When I said that I needed it to work with my laptop, he suggested that I go to a computer expert who know more about how to change the settings on my PC so that it worked with the scanner. The tech was nice, but unhelpful.
At this point I decided that I spent enough time trying to get this product to work. I consider myself fairly computer literate, but neither the customer service tech nor I could figure out how to make the scanner work. I returned it to Amazon this morning.

Works Exactly as Advertised; I'm Definitely Impressed

I love the Air Copy scanner. My old scanner tends to be a bit crabby, and to be honest, it's a pain in the butt to use. It was large and bulky, and it has to sit far away from my computer - and it's definitely nowhere near me when I'm out at work or on the go. That's why I love the Air Copy so much; it is slim and very portable which makes it really easy to carry around. It doesn't have its own case, and it's made from plastic, though, so you'll definitely want to either find it a case or make sure to be careful when carrying it.
Use is really simple too. I was worried that everything wouldn't sync correctly, but it was a breeze. I just installed the app, turned on the air copy, and then connected my cell phone to the Air Copy's own Wi-Fi signal. It took less than five minutes for the initial set-up, and it takes about 30 seconds now for "set-up" anytime I want to use it. (And that's mostly because it takes the Air Copy about 10/15 seconds to boot-up the Wi-Fi signal when you first turn it on.)
As for scan quality, scan quality is pretty amazing. I think it's actually better than my stand-alone scanner that I own. Nothing is pixelated, and when I set the quality to High Resolution (you can set it to standard if you're just doing non-important scans and the scanning goes much more quickly), it can be printed out again without any loss of quality. It only takes about ten seconds to scan any particular document at high-resolution, and it takes even less time for standard resolution. Really, the pictures look perfect.
From regular use, I have some tips about using the Air Copy. For one, try to insert the paper from an upwards angle. It seems to crease the paper less when you do that. Along with that, try to put the paper in completely straight. If the paper is at an angle, it'll still work, but it doesn't work as smoothly as if the paper is straight.
My only complaint about the scanner is that it's a bit picky. Maybe a couple weeks hasn't been enough time to master exactly how it works, but I do have a problem with the paper sometimes not being "pulled in" to scan as well as a corner of the page being folded over when the scanning is complete. When the paper doesn't properly get pulled in, just restarting the scanning process the next time through usually fixes the problem, but I wish it would, 100% of the time, just scan the page I ask it to. It's more like 95%, though. It's not a huge deal, and the portability of the scanner more-than makes up for the slight bother, but the scanner would pretty much be perfect if it wasn't for that small issue. Hopefully in a couple months I can update this review saying that I've figured out how to increase that percentage.
Other than that, though, I would definitely recommend the Air Copy to pretty much anyone who needs a portable scanner. It works fantastically on the devices I've paired it with, and it pretty much makes scanning effortless. It doesn't matter if I'm in the middle of a desert or just sitting in my apartment, the Air Copy makes its own Wi-Fi, so I can scan whereever. (Also, I've scanned some pages while being a passenger in a vehicle, so if you travel a lot, this could be particularly useful.)
