Great piece of equipment that does what it is supposed to, scan stuff. What more do you want. Quick, efficient, and easy to set up.
The ADS-1000W, with wireless and USB interfaces, features a color duplex scan speed of up to 16 ppm. Through the 20-page capacity auto document feeder it scans receipts, photos, documents up to 34" long, and plastic cards to various destinations, including PC, e-mail, FTP, USB flash drive, and mobile devices using the free iPrint & Scan app. Includes numerous advanced scanning features, and a TouchPanel display for one-touch scanning to common destinations. Bundled with a full suite of scanning software, including desktop document and business card management programs. Plus, BR-Receipts software offers organization of scanned receipts, report generation, and exporting to Quicken and QuickBooks. PC/Mac/Linux compatible.

Scans super fast, ADF(automatic document feeder) works great, paper should be straight without crumbled edges to ensure good feed scans. Stand-alone product can scan directly to USB drive(not provided) or a running computer. This model does not scan to email or ftp as a stand-alone...to scan to email or ftp you'll need to use the provided software on your computer to do so. (this is important to know as I thought differently when I purchased, but still rated 5 stars based on it's other options).
To setup the item, I used a wireless laptop with a usb connected for preliminary setup. The software found the unit, found the wireless SSID name, and applied my settings to the device. From my Windows 7 desktop and Windows 8 laptops it found the device rather easily as well (once it was connected to the wireless network). For example (Windows 7) You just go to "Start" ->"control panel" -> "View devices and printers" -> "add a device" -> "find the ADS-1000W" and add it. Then use the software in the package or your own favorite software to scan and create PDF's, JPGs etc.
Speed: When scanning black and white images over the wireless the sheets feed through super quick and it gets transmitted to the computer or usb stick(not provided) very quick too... Business speed ready in my opinion. As for full hi-resolution color, it scans a bit slower(but still fast compared to others) but it transmits over the wireless a little too slow due to the size of the PDF or JPG it's transmitting over your wireless network. If you're scanning 2 or 3 hi-res images the time to transmit it to your computer via wireless is tolerable, but if you plan on scanning 10 to 15 hi-res images/documents to one PDF, plugging in the direct USB connection might be your best bet. (I didn't try the 10 to 15 hi-res documents to test out the speed, I'm only estimating based on the 2 hi-res color documents time to transmit over wirreless to my PC.)
I've personally tested this device on Windows 7 Pro and Windows 8 Standard and used 1 gig USB drive for direct scanning in stand-alone mode. (stand-alone mode meaning no computer necessary)
ONE MORE GREAT FEATURE: when scanning to a LOCAL USB drive in stand-alone mode, the scanner scans both sides of the document at once which SAVES huge amounts of time on duplex documents. The unit is perfect desktop size. The paper feeder has hinges which allows it to fold down and close up to a small rectangular box (great for travel or just desk space savings) which automatically tells the device to go in standby mode. Also, when you unfold the paper feeder, it has two extra supports that extend the paper feeder another 6 inches beyond what the stock picture shows which gives the paper more support when you have a larger stack of 8.5 x 11. This extension allows for better paper support to keep the papers straight while being fed into the machine. This model DOES not have a LCD digital display (another model above this I think does, but it's not necessary), It has a smooth touch pad like a laptop that has 6 static icons that light up for different functions (like scan directly to usb, start scan, scan to pc1,scan to pc2, stop scan, usb is connected).
Sheet feeder holds 20 sheets I think the specs say so if you scan a large number of documents then you might want to look at the 50 sheet feeder option on another Brother model. For small contracts and home documents it works perfect. They also include a clear "wrapping sheet" that is used to scan different sized items such a receipts. This clear sheet keeps small receipts from getting jammed. I also noticed on the back it has a place to scan cards like licenses, business cards etc. I haven't tried that option yet though.
Overall great product with business like speed, great options, great quality in a small compact unit.

The Brother ADS-1000W is mysteriously compact and freakishly fast to use. The top flips up with one hand and in seconds it's ready to scan your documents of nearly any size -- quickly! I use mine on my MacBook Pro with Maverick and had to go to the Brother website to download the most current upgrade before I could get it to work! But once installed I opened their control center, selected "file" and put in a sheet of paper that had writing on both sides and "zip" it was done . In all honesty I was ready for there to some kind of error and most certainly did not expect the back side to have been copied perfectly, but as you can see. Fast and crazy accurate!
It comes with a Receipt Carrier Sheet that (from what I can tell) is used to support smaller receipts when going through the machine. As of this writing I haven't used the wireless feature but will add that here at a later time.
Overall, this little guy is far superior to printer style scanners for the dual scanning alone. It's a perfect tool to quickly send needed docs to someone, you put your document in the machine, press "email" and that's pretty much the hard part. If you haven't converted to the "scanner's way" this is a great way to discover why it's so popular. What a great way to keep track of receipts without keeping a ton of trash. You go to the store, scan your receipt and toss it into the recycle bin. Someone needs that sales ad you had lying on your table, scan it over to them. You'll see how fast it is, it's almost unbelievable that you went this long without it!

I have this scanner setup in the corner of my office, taking up minimal desk space, plugged into power and ready to connect to the WiFi. The selling points for this unit, I think, are the small size for a good-quality full-duplex (two sided) scanner that connects via WiFi.
My use of the unit is probably close to the intended use, for receipts, and also for getting hand sketches into email. Also I can quickly "clip" junk mail items of interest and recycle the physical mail right away. For larger scan jobs, I would definitely use a different piece of equipment, and be willing to walk down the hall to access it... The scanner is too big, especially with the power adapter, to carry around in a bag, definitely not a mobile scanner, but is small enough to take with you from desk to table or other working location. And then it would connect back into the same network.
Setting this up, using a USB cable connection to my Mac laptop, was quite simple. It worked right away, and there were no issues.

I have co workers use this to scan receipts while traveling. Works perfect with regular SD cards or the WiFi SD

This is a great scanner. Very small and light. It works fast and the image quality is good. Some things to note: The batteries it came with were dead, leading me to believe intially that the product was faulty. But if this should happen to you, just pop in a fresh pair and you're good to go. Also, there is no internal memory for scanned items, so to do any scanning whatsoever, you need the SD card. Best get that along with purchasing the scanner.
The scanner is perfect for the office or quickly capturing an image or two off a book page, however, although small and thin, don't expect it to get into those hard to reach corners of large books. Though designed to get to most places other scanners cannot, to truly scan an entire book, you'll need to separate the binding in which case you'll be just as well off with a flat bed scanner. But the scanner is still a good accessory for the student on the go.
Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase and recommend this product.

This is more than I had even hoped for. Love it to take to the library when doing research. It eliminates having to take notes as you can just scan and take home to put on your computer. It is a great time saving tool.

I bought this so I can convert the highlights I make on my textbook to electronic format which makes it great for using quotes for research papers or open book/open note tests where you can search a keyword. I first bought a pen scanner, but it takes time scanning individual lines which can be frustrating when you highlight almost the whole page. So I decided to buy this wand scanner. First, unlike other wand scanners, this one came with an 8 GB microSD card, which made it an even better deal.
In terms of the hardware, for my purposes of using it on a textbook, I was disappointed at first. Then I discovered the best way to scan is from the binding, to the outer edge of the page. The image will come out sideways, but the scans are more consistent than going top to bottom because when you do that, the page tends to start bending inward. It's a good idea to scan each page at least 2x, even 3-4 times if you think you messed up, because there is no way to preview an image and it is better to be safe than sorry. With 8 GB there is plenty of space, I also suggest putting it on the high dpi setting. It's very important to try to maintain a constant slow speed across the page.
This unit DOES NOT COME WITH Mac software for OCR. So I had to get an OCR software and ended up with ABBYY FineReader Express which was not too expensive and had excellent character recognition.
I do forsee problems with this unit in terms of scanning smaller books. The problem is the scanning "window" is not right at the edge of the scanner. There is a gap on both ends "short edge" (one end does have a shorter gap of about 1/2" so you do need at least that much clearance. Also along the long edge, the scanning window is closer to one edge but still requires a clearance of about a 1/4".
It is nice that this scanner comes with a nice pouch and cleaning cloth. It does use 2 AA batteries though I am unsure of the battery life. At least the LCD does have a battery level indicator which is good.
If I ever have to scan something at a library, this unit will come in very handy because of its portability. On the other hand, if you have a recent smart phone with a high megapixel camera and good image quality, you can probably just take a snapshot and use an OCR program later. For smaller books, that may be your only choice because you probably won't be able to get good scans with this wand scanner because of the clearance requirements.
Update 2/19/2013:
After using this for about a month, I am still very satisfied with the product. I use regular alkaline batteries (which were in good shape when I put it in but not brand new shape) and they are still working. When you scan, the battery level may dip but upon completion of scan it goes back up. I'm down to 2-1 battery level with a 3 at the max, so I will need to replace the batteries soon. This time I'll try brand new batteries to see how long they last.
Scans are about 1 to 1.5 Mb in size depending on what you scan. But even if we say 2 Mb per scan to be on the safe side, you'll still be able to scan 4000 pages. If you scan 3 times per page to be on the safe side, you can still scan over 1300 pages. Hopefully you won't be sitting in a library scanning that many pages, I'm not sure how long that would take!
I have not used my pen scanner since I got this device and actually wish I got this earlier, because scanning line by line with a pen scanner was a pain. Once again, I do recommend a decent OCR software, the one I am using which I mentioned previously is cheap and it works very well.
UPDATE 3/19/13: I encountered a serious problem with this scanner. As I mentioned above you should scan slowly and make several scans of a page to be safe. I found out with certain books, even though I definitely move the scanner past the edge of the text, the text cuts off! I was at the library scanning a book and thankfully I brought my tablet to confirm the images. I tried rescanning very carefully on the effected pages but to no avail. If the edge of the book does not have enough white space you will most likely encounter cut off text. This is very bad and I no longer recommend this product, so I have downgraded the rating from 5 stars to 1 star. I have wasted couple hours because of this defect.
UPDATE 3/26/13: Today I scanned the same book though it was a newer reprinted book compared to the one I scanned last week at the library. As is what I usually do, I scanned each page 3 times, slowly, and 100% made sure the scanning window passed the edge of the text. I only scanned 1 chapter this time. Of all the scans only a few had the text cut off at the end but the other 2 scans of the same page made up for it. I did not have to rescan any pages like I had to do last week. But I still find it very strange that the text would cut off like that or come very close to the text margin even though I scanned sufficiently past the margin. This scanner is still useful for me, so I will upgrade my rating to 3 stars. If you use this at a library, you really need a laptop to double check the scans, that's the safest way to do it.
UPDATE 5/18/13: I downgraded this scanner back down to 2 stars. I scan book sideways from the binding to the edge. I am always worried that I will get the text closest to the binding, but that part ends up being scanned in properly. As mentioned in my previous updates, the problem is the text on the outer edge of the book I am scanning. Even though the wand goes sufficiently beyond the text margin, the firmware in the scanner tries to cut off the white space and ends up cutting off the text making my scans useless. It DOESN'T MATTER HOW SLOW OR STRAIGHT you make scans, the last bit of text is very likely to be cut off if you scan sideways. Again this is really the only way to scan books with this device.

pros:
great scanner for the price, once you finally have all your frequencies saved it works well. very durable unit that will give you years of use will little to no trouble. allows 25 frequencies off your choice to be stored. you can store 100 if you are saving in a particular band of frequency's, IE 2 meter or police band. green screen is easy on the eyes.
cons:
by far the highway patrol warning feature. when the unit is turned on it emits a very loud beep 3 times as it tests the alert feature. i really wish this could be disabled, after the unit has tested you can mute the alert but it only lasts until the scanner is shut off. it does not have alpha numeric labeling like the new scanners on the market do, an example would be instead of 155.5950 it you could make it say duluth pd.
if you don't need 11m citizens band coverage the bct-350x series scanner will work well for less. they don't have the alert feature so you don't deaf when turning the scanner on. if you are going to be using this in your vehicle make sure you check state laws as most do not allow scanner in vehicles unless you are a ham. also the included dipole window antenna is useless. a cheap scanner 2m antenna from radio shack will really increase the performance and makes a worthwhile purchase, if using as a base antenna a simple long wire antenna can be made or a discone antenna can be used. the higher the better and outside makes a big difference.

This is the first bear tracker I have seen that did not come set up for 12 volt.(And, I was not informed of this by the seller.) I had to buy a converter. For the first week I used it, it never alerted at all. Then after one week it stopped working altogether. I will never buy used electronic items through Amazon again. I tried, unsuccessfully, to get some kind of return label for this item. It is currently sitting in my garage.

I've had my BCT7 for 15 years now. Still works great with the exception of the LCD having some issues due to being in my truck when it was cold out, but I can get a replacement if it gets bad enough. I love it, it complements my collection rather nicely....and if it ever does bite the dust, I'll go the next step up, which is the BCT8 right now. Uniden has always made the best scanners!
